JOHN HINES
John Hines, internationally acclaimed bass and vocal pedagogue, is a Professor of Voice at the University of Northern Iowa. A member of the UNI faculty since 2006, he is a teacher of singing who also maintains a local, national and international profile as a concert artist, master class clinician, competition adjudicator, and champion for the performance of Russian vocal music.
As a vocal artist possessing a versatile and agile instrument capable of executing a wide vocal range of repertory, it is Hines’s imposing presence and rich vocal sonority that are the cornerstones to his performance repertory of more than 50 symphonic, oratorio and operatic works – works spanning the Russian bass to German Heldenbariton repertory. Pinnacles of his singing career include a 2013 Carnegie Hall debut as the bass soloist in Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass, and 2009 recital debut performing Franz Schubert’s song-cycle Winterreise at the State Academic Capella in Saint Petersburg, Russia – the latter of which was a work not heard in this venue since the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, sixty years prior. Regarded as “The American Chaliapin” [Oreol-TV 4, Saint Petersburg, Russia] for his many performances throughout the Russian Federation – programs predominantly comprised of Russian music – Hines was invited to serve as the American representative on the international panel of jurors for the Boris T. Shtokolov International Vocal Competition from 2008-2014. As an adjudicator he also served as a master class clinician, and as a featured artist in yearly gala concerts with artists from the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, Estonia National and Kiev Theaters – many of which performances were broadcast live over Russian Federal Television and Radio. Hines’s work in the US as an operatic performer has canvassed a wide range of repertory from Wagner to Gilbert and Sullivan. Roles that he has most enjoyed numerous performances include SARASTRO, OSMIN, WOTAN, HUNDING, SCARPIA, OLIN BLITCH, and JOHN FALSTAFF (Nicolai). Prior to joining the UNI faculty, Hines served on the music faculties of Cornerstone, Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan, Ball State and Pittsburg State Universities respectively. Many of his students have gone on to succeed as primary and secondary vocal music educators, to pursue advanced degrees at prestigious university and conservatory graduate studies programs, participate in top young artist programs (i.e. Merola, Houston, Glimmerglass, Wolf Trap, Central City, Chautauqua, Des Moines Metro), or singing careers abroad. Born in North Central Ohio, Dr. Hines earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music, Master of Music degree from Kent State University, and Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Heidelberg University. He also received advanced vocal and operatic studies from Indiana University and the American Institute of Music Studies in Graz, Austria. His principal voice teachers were Bard Suverkrop, James Mismas, Dale Moore, Carlos Montané, and Norman Wurgler; and, he has worked privately or in master classes with James King, Giorgio Tozzi, Italo Tajo, Nico Castel, John Wustman, Andrew White, and Shirlee Emmons. In his pastime, he enjoys golfing, woodworking, UNI and Alabama football, and attending yearly sporting events with his family. Dr. Hines resides in Cedar Falls with his wife, two children, and dog “Buddy.” |
